A SEMINAR OF CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS CRITICISM. Held by Rok Vevar (Slovenia)

14th-16th of September, 2018

The contemporary performing arts are those stage practices and productions that are directly or indirectly connected to the artistic approaches, procedures, formats and notions of the modern, postmodern and different (historical, neo- and trans-) avant-garde theatre, choreographic, physical and technological stage practices etc. and which usually transgress the ways we watch classical or traditional performing arts. In order to access them in a critical way and to increase our analytical competences, we need to find our ways into them, to invent our process or strategies of watching and observe how they see us back. A three days seminar for contemporary performing arts criticism is going to offer the reading tools for those arts along with the possible writing approaches, critical tactics and strategies. The first day we’ll try to unfold some systemic elements/categories of contemporary performing arts in order to access and possibly accelerate the process of perception (reading/ watching/scanning/confronting/negotiating/participating etc.), using some useful video materials of historical examples. The second and the third day we are going to open a writing playground, introducing some playful and creative writing exercises, in order to approach with them the works seen at the PLArTFORMA 2018.
